Student Day of Action 2008.
Wednesday November 5 saw students from six post-secondary schools march on the Ontario Parliament to protest high tuition fees. Students from the University of Toronto Mississauga(UTM) and the Ontario College of Art and Design(OCAD) gathered outside of the OCAD campus before marching to the University of Toronto St.George campus. There, students from York, Ryerson and George Brown joined the group where they began their protest to the Ontario Parliament. Jack Layton joined the march and gave a speech encouraging students, saying that ‘We must invest in our green future.’ As students approached the foot of Parliament, they broke from their police escort and created a road block, sitting in the middle of the University-College intersection. No one was hurt during the half-hour roadblock ordeal.
The student’s protest has given rise to some criticism regarding their motives. Traditionally, students have protested for the lowering of the ever-so-quickly rising tuition fees, however, this Student Day of Action argued for the removal of tuition fees all together.
