It wouldn’t be U of T without a protest.

There was a Governing Council meeting today at UTM. On the dockett: the controversial flat fees. Although UTM has explicitly said they will not be announcing flat fees, downtown has yet to decide. As a result, the entire circus came down from St.George to protest. In attendance: Sandy from UTSU, Jeff from APUS, and of course, Walied. The protesters were not let upstairs, save for Sandy, Jeff, and Walied. Campo was there to block the way of the protesters, only letting up those who had the proper credentials. Instead, the protesters made lots of noise downstairs – bongos and signs in tow, reading “eliminate tuition fees” or something of that nature.

I only ask, what will the value of our education be if we don’t have any education fees? Sure, flat fees probably aren’t all that great, but if you are already taking a full 5 credit course load, then are you going to be paying any more then what you already would? Reducing tuition fees or eliminating them all together would just (in my opinion) make our post-secondary education system utter crap. The incoming Editor-in-Chief of The Medium, Alain Latour, wrote a great article when he was just a green features editor last year about this very topic. For some reason it is not posted on The Medium’s website. It’s a great read. I’ll find it and post it later.

Anyways, here’s a photo of APUS’ Jeff Peters as he is hassled by Campo before allowed upstairs to the meeting.

Update: here’s the article to go with it, written by our incoming news editor, Saaliha Malik
