Ignatieff at UTM

Federal Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff came to UTM last wednesday and I covered it for The Medium. It was a pretty unique experience, I shot my first federal press conference – Ignatieff gave some comments on the Haiti situation prior to his town-hall style talk with students. Plus, it’s always nice to be able to rub shoulders with professional photographers from CP and other news organizations. The Varsity also picked up my photo for their cover last Thursday.

Anyways, here are a few shots from the day. I really like the last one, and was hoping to run it cover of The Medium this week, but the rest of the editorial team vetoed me and opted for a more conventional photo.

I did a photoshoot last week at The Cookbook Store in Toronto on Yonge Street. I can’t give away just yet who it was, but it was for The Medium and they weren’t a local band. Here’s a teaser:

My USS photoshoot from last May is finally getting published in The Medium this week. Here are some sneak peaks, but I’ll give you a hint: It involves fruit, a blender, and a mess.

Just published Issue 6 of The Medium and I think it was one of our best issues yet. I’m also very proud of our throw this week, definitely one my favourites. Speaking of the throw, We launched a new regular feature, called A Talk With, where we interview and get to know some of UTM’s most famous and revered professors and staff. We also covered Bang For a Buck, where students could pay a couple of bucks to beat the bajeezus out of a car – t’was good fun.

Issue 1

We published the first issue of the year of The Medium this Tuesday. The issue went off without (too much of) a hitch. No big problems with our printer, which is surprisingly strange, because usually we get a call at 3 or 4 am in the morning telling us we need to re send them files because the ones we sent had errors. So I hope thats a good sign. We shall see. There was nothing too big in the first issue, which is to be expected, mainly just frosh coverage.

I took the cover photo (below) during the annual frosh parade through the U of T annex area. For the strobists out there: D90 with 18-55 f3.5-4.5 and SB600 on camera for fill flash to equal out the bright sunlight in the background. The photo didn’t turn out too bad, I just wish I had some better optics in the wide section. I difference is huge when going from a 35 f1.8 to a 18-55 f3.5-4.5. I’m thinking of either the 18-55 f2.8, or a 12-24 f4, but both run about 1,000. We’ll see what I can afford.

Orientation Rocks Toronto

We met up with USS at their Sound Academy show in Toronto yesterday for an interview and photoshoot for the first ever edition of The Medium magazine, coming out in September.

Some random shots from the USS shoot yesterday, mainly of Michael the Arts editor and Jaime. White Balance did something strange, so I’m not too sure whats going on there, but they have a nice polaroid-ey feel to them – I kinda like it so I didn’t put too much into fixing these up, just some curves and sharpening. I was using my new Nikon 35mm DX 1.8G on my D90, shooting at ISO 250 at 1/640 F4. The 35 1.8 is a great little lens, incredibly sharp and fast, my only issue with it is that the bokeh isn’t the most attractive I’ve seen, nothing compared to my Nikon 80-200 2.8D – but at $300, you get what you pay for I guess. Still a great lens that I highly reccommend.

We did the shoot on location at the Sound Academy parking lot, and after waiting for over an hour outside in what started out as a beautiful day, USS finally came out to meet us. We managed to get into the parking attendant’s booth (after much confusion with both the parking attendant and some circuit breakers) who had a power outlet inside, and were able to plug the blender in there. Not having a table or any sort of support for the blender, we used what was originally an automatic parking gate box that once had the arm to let cars in or out mounted to it.

After making an enormous fruit-filled mess, the shoot was over, and a success. USS enjoyed the gifts we brought them – bananas, strawberries, oranges, fruit juice, a blender, and caution tape – and had a great time outside making smoothies in the parking lot. We left them the fruit, blender and caution tape to use in their show. In their last song, they made smoothies on stage with the fruit we brought them, and one of their “dancers” poured the remains of the smoothie we made outside all over his hairy, bare chest.
