Steel Bananas

Along With The Medium, I also work as the photo editor of an online arts & culture magazine called Steel Bananas. Below is some of my Steel Bananas work - which is mostly editorial work -including covers, which I have shot and designed, interview photographs, with typography that I have also done as well as other various Steel Bananas photographs.

Cover Story: NXNE 2009: The Theatrical One-Man-Glam-Pop of Diamond Rings

"Gravity Wave is a curious entity, that’s for certain. Sometimes manic electro-pop madman, sometimes bouncy showtune crooner, occasionally quirky funk party leader and most often, purveyor of eccentric, assorted and extremely catchy pop tracks."

Cover Story: NXNE 2009: The Theatrical One-Man-Glam-Pop of Diamond Rings

"I’m wrapping up the “official business” section of our meeting with Toronto’s the Schomberg Fair, a band that can very loosely be described as playing psychedelic-folk-rock-blues-gospel-country-punk. The singer-songwriter/guitarist/banjoist/harmonica player of this demonic, ungodly outfit, one Matt Bahen, has ducked out of the interview to get another beer; thus, naturally, the conversation has steered in his direction."

Cover Story: NXNE 2009: The Theatrical One-Man-Glam-Pop of Diamond Rings

"John O’Regan; every time I’ve seen the unreasonably tall musician and artist in person, he’s been wearing a vintage basketball jersey. I don’t know what the deal with this is. I’m not sure if he really just likes basketball, really just likes irony or really just has a thing for sports swag. Perhaps some things should just be left as mysteries and O’Regan’s penchant for tank tops is merely another one of the numerous eccentricities about the guy that make him such an interesting character..."

NXNE 2009: The Decidedly Sixties Retro Space-Pop of Hopeful Monster

"Jason Ball, the man behind the lush sixties-pop throwback project, Hopeful Monster, has just put more sugar in his coffee than I ever thought was possible. Has he recently spliced his DNA with that of a fly and I’m Geena Davis? It strikes me that this would be a perfect opportunity to compare the man’s obviously sweet tooth to his cavity-inducing melodies, but that seems like it might be a little too on the nose, so I’ll resign myself to indirectly making that correlation by writing..."[Steel Bananas]

Journals of a staunch Carnivore

"I have undertaken, in these notes, the challenge that a vegetarian faces every day: not eating meat. I am skeptically hanging up my canines to embrace the molar action that I predominantly deem less important. Not that I am against the vegetarian movement in general – I mean hell, everyone has got to eat something. I simply cannot understand how a human being can willingly look at a monstrously over-sized steak and say: “Not for me.”..."[Steel Bananas]

Two Micro Essays by B-Rad

"Why do we label things? Name things? The simple and obvious answer to this is that we, as intelligent beings, need to categorize and name objects, people, places, ideas—in short our whole world—in order to function. Labels aid in our daily functioning, so to speak, yet, how does meaning function in relation to labels? Usually, when we label something—say a genre of music—we do so in order to convey meaning, to communicate an idea. But can the word, that is, the label actually relate directly to the idea or concept? Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure’s account of how this relationship works comes in handy here..."
